Fully Licensed Operation

UK Driver Requirements
To work as a private hire chauffeur in the UK — and with Aurex — you must meet the following legal requirements. These apply across England and Wales (including Cardiff and South Wales).
Full UK Driving Licence
You must hold a full DVLA photocard driving licence. EU licences must be converted to a UK licence before applying. You must have held it for at least 12 months (some councils require 3 years).
Private Hire Driver Licence (PHDL)
You must hold a valid Private Hire Driver Licence (PHDL) issued by your local council. This is a legal requirement to carry passengers for hire or reward in the UK. You cannot work without this.
Enhanced DBS Check
An Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) certificate is required — specifically for the Taxi / Private Hire category. Must be dated within 2 months of your application. Apply via gov.uk or through your council.
DVLA Driver Record (D4 Medical)
A Group 2 medical examination (DVLA D4 form) completed by a licensed GP. This confirms your physical fitness to drive professionally. Required by most councils and updated periodically.
Proof of Right to Work in the UK
A valid UK/Irish passport, British birth certificate, or biometric residence permit confirming your legal right to live and work in the United Kingdom.
National Insurance Number
You must provide your National Insurance number. This is required for council licensing and for HMRC records when receiving payment.
Proof of Address
A bank statement or utility bill dated within the last 3 months, showing your current UK address. Must be in your name and match your other documents.
Profile Photo
A clear, recent passport-style photograph taken against a plain background. Used for your driver ID and vehicle information card.
Hire & Reward Insurance
Standard car insurance does NOT cover private hire work. You must hold valid hire & reward (H&R) insurance covering you as a private hire driver. This is separate from your vehicle insurance (see Vehicle Registration).
Safeguarding / Topographical Test
Depending on your local council, you may need to pass a topographical knowledge test (local area knowledge) and/or an online safeguarding awareness assessment.
